  • Compared to other states and cities in the region, Michigan’s cost of living remains more affordable – all amenities included.

    Companies and residents alike find Michigan to be very affordable. In each of the past 10 years, the Detroit Consumer Price Index (CPI), which covers the 10-county metro Detroit region and is home to more than 50 percent of the state’s population, has been below the national average. Home prices, as reported by the National Association of Home Builders' Housing Opportunity Index for 2009, compare favorably with other high-tech and industrialized regions around the nation.

    • Housing is 383% more expensive in Boston than Lansing. Overall, Boston is 76% more expensive than Lansing.
    • Housing is 413% more expensive in San Jose than Grand Rapids. Overall, San Jose is 94% more expensive than Grand Rapids.
    • Housing is 366% more expensive in Chicago than Kalamazoo. Overall, Chicago is 65% more expensive than Kalamazoo.
    • Housing in Columbus, Ohio is nearly twice the cost of that in Lansing, and overall, Columbus is 19% more expensive than Lansing. 
    • Housing in Madison, Wisconsin is 74% more expensive than Grand Rapids. Overall, Madison is 12% more expensive than Grand Rapids.
