From the time he was a kid, Keith Brophy had an interest running his own business.
In April, Global Energy Innovations, housed in Kettering University’s TechWorks Incubator, became the first Flint business named one of Michigan’s 50 Companies to Watch. In January, the three-year-old Kettering spinoff bested more than 200 entrants to win first place in the new business category of the Great Lakes Entrepreneur’s Quest annual business plan competition and a $5,000 prize.

The winning idea in a new statewide competition for ideas to get Michigan’s economy moving is “Thunder Down Under – Underwater Turbines,” a proposal to harness the power of Michigan’s rivers and lakes, was submitted by two University of Michigan students.
