DOE and U.S. Department of Defense Announce Clean Energy Agreement

DOE announced on July 27 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between itself and the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate clean energy innovation and enhance national energy security. Both agencies are committed to reducing U.S. vulnerabilities through improved efficiencies, reduced fossil fuel use, and on-site renewable power generation.

Michigan Communities Receive $1.6 Million in Brownfield Funding

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the recipients of $16 million in brownfield cleanup funding.  Two Michigan communities, Wayne County and the Downriver Community Conference, are receiving a combined total of $1.6 million in revolving loan fund grants to carryout cleanup activities, redevelopment projects, and to create jobs for local residents living near the sites.

Detroit Edison Seeks Wind Turbine Supplier for Proposed MI Wind Farms

Rural Cooperative Development Grants Announced

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the availability of the 2010 Rural Cooperative Development Grants.  These grants provide funding for the establishment and operation of centers for cooperative development for the primary purpose of improving the economic condition of rural areas.  Funds will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate the ability to assist individuals or entities in the startup, expansion, or operational improvement of rural businesses. 

Solid State Lighting U.S. Manufacturing - Round Two Open

DOE has opened a second round of its Solid State Lighting – U.S. Manufacturing Competition.  This round is seeking applied research which will achieve cost-reduction in solid-state lighting (SSL) through improvements in manufacturing equipment, processes, or techniques.  The accomplishment of this goal is expected to lead to more rapid adoption/installation of high quality SSL products, resulting in a significant reduction in energy use and environmental pollutants.

Treasury Announces Guidelines for Applying for 48D Tax Credits and Cash Grants for Life Sciences Companies

On May 21, 2010, the U.S. Department of the Treasury ("Treasury") released guidelines (the "Notice") for applying for certification ("§48D Certification") for a tax credit or cash grant in connection with a qualifying therapeutic discovery project.

DOE Announces Program to Speed Innovative Ideas to Market

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an initiative designed to accelerate the movement of innovative energy technologies from university laboratories to the market.  In a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled “Innovation Ecosystem Development Initiative” the DOE solicits applications which propose approaches to accelerating the commercialization of clean energy technologies developed at universities.  This program is designed to address the inefficiencies sometimes seen in attempts to bridge the gap between the lab and the entrepreneurs necessary to move technology to the marketplace. 

Interactive Tool to Ensure Compliance with H-1B Visa Program Announced

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced the availability of a new Web tool, the H-1B Advisor, to help ensure compliance with the requirements of the H-1B visa program. The advisor provides detailed information about the program’s standards and employers and workers rights and responsibilities. The tool is designed to help employers and others understand how to comply with the program, which allows for the temporary employment of foreign workers in the U.S. in certain specialty occupations.  By answering questions relevant to specific H-1B classified workers, the advisor helps users determine if they fulfill the requirements of the program.

USDA Announces REAP Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvement Program

The USDA has released a new solicitation on its Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).  The opportunity is entitled Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements and is open until June 30, 2010.  The program provides grants for energy audits and renewable energy development assistance.  It also provides funding to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to make energy efficient improvements and install renewable energy systems.  Eligible projects include retrofitting lighting or insulation, purchasing or replacing equipment with more efficiency units, and projects that produce energy from wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hydro power and hydrogen-based sources.
