Michigan’s SmartZones offer localized, low-cost co-working spaces, training and mentorship to entrepreneurs, researchers and startups in 21 locations across the state.
With funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, these organizations help tenants accelerate their business concepts from ideation into commercialization by providing them the resources they need to grow.
WMed’s Assistant Dean Sandra Cochrane goes “In the Zone” to provide a tour of the WMed Innovation Center in Kalamazoo, a SmartZone focused on life science, technology and engineering that has served businesses like Vestaron, Kalexsyn, SafeSense Technologies and ProNAi Therapeutics. The 69,000-square-foot incubator features offices, conference rooms, laboratories, equipment and expertise for entrepreneurs to use to build their businesses. Since its inception, the organization has served 66 companies, which have created 174 jobs, earned 66 patents and received more than $127.5 million in angel and venture capital investments.
